About these English notes

The Class 10 SEE English paper is unusual among SEE subjects because half of its marks come from writing rather than from recalling facts. The syllabus here is therefore split in two, exactly as the exam is. The first group covers grammar in the order the syllabus teaches it: articles, prepositions, tenses, connectives, question tags, reported speech, voice, conditional sentences, subject-verb agreement, interrogation and negation, causative verbs, modals, relative pronouns, and adjectives and adverbs. Each grammar chapter explains the rule, shows the common mistake, and gives paired examples that contrast a wrong answer with a right one, because in a multiple-choice grammar question the distractor is usually the mistake you are most likely to make.

The second group covers writing skills: paragraphs, describing labels and charts, sets of instructions, recipes, advertisements, notices, rules and regulations, news stories, story skeletons, condolence and congratulation messages, invitation and thank-you letters, biography, leave and job applications, dialogue, letters, email, short essay, diary entries, newspaper articles, and book and film reviews. Each writing chapter gives a worked model with the layout marked out, because in this paper the format carries marks on its own. Together the two groups cover every question the paper has asked in recent years.
